Before you hear your own wedding bells ring, have you heard of pre-marital counselling or course?

There are plenty of such courses out there, be it in churches, family service centres or places of religions.

Couples pay quite alot to join these courses and at the end of the day, some find such courses a waste of time.

My friend took part in the course with her husband-to-be at that point in time. Her conclusion…? was that she could have better spent the time at the beach.

In fact, many aspects of maintaining a good relationship can be learnt from planning your wedding.

For instance, when it comes to budgeting, many couples find it really hard to discuss ad come to a common understanding. They have difficulty agreeing what to spend and how much to spend.

Other instances such as understanding the value and belief of your spouse-to-be. For example, the bride may feel that she needs to get the best gown and the most expensive bridal package.

The groom on the other hand may feel that they should get what they can afford.

More challenges await them when they meet the parents.

Family beliefs and power struggle are other aspects to take note.

Family beliefs such as traditional beliefs and practices at home have to be discussed.

For example, the bride’s family may have complicated wedding custom that has to be followed. However, the groom’s family is not particular over such traditions. Complications may arise from such situation of whose practices to follow.

Power struggle may arise when other family members or even relatives want to play a part in giving feedback or “helping” out at the wedding.

    Wedding A Step Backward

Wedding is a big transition in our life. Whenever our friends around us is going to get married, the news will reach many more others. Friends will tell friends. These friends will tell more friends.

I had this experience that I told my NUS classmate, who already had 3 children, that I’m getting married and he was invited.

Being married for over 20 years, he asked me this question: “Are you sure?”

I also remembered my mischievious colleague, who also had two children, drew on the staff’s movement chart on my wedding day, two weddding rings entangled and below she wrote “Wedding rings are the smallest handcuffs on earth.”

My experience was different when I told my friends who were singles. They were full of envy and especially the ladies, they will ask when is their turn, not to get married, but to find their prince.

Marriage life for me was really different from courtship and being single.

Being single, I can go whereever I want even to the extent of booking a tour the very day and flying off the enxt day. I spent my money on myself.

Being in relationship means putting my girlfriend in my mind whatever I do or whatever decision I make. Schedule had to be adjusted so that we could spend time together. A small amount of money could be spent for dating such as buying her dinner, gifts and taxi fare.

Being married means taking of my wife for eternity and taking of the house, the expenditure, the chores, the finance and many more…you name it…do you that the list is getting longer now, much longer?

My Wedding Blog won’t Last Long

As I was browsing through websites trying to find those that are related to wedding, I realised that there were quite a few in Singapore.

So far, this web siteinterests me most because it sells self-designed and customised wedding favors.

wedding favorThey ranged from badges to keychains.

It makes me wonder if I cold be as entreprenuerial as her.

Maintaining this website had cost me hundred of dollars ever since I first launched it last year, August.

Though it had helped many readers (about 15,000 of them) who are having difficulties planning their wedding, it had also somewhat affected my marriage life.

My wife did comment that I may be spending too much online.

    Oh dear…

    Meet My Family

    meet the robinson

Just watched the movie “Meet The Robinsons” which depicts a story of an orphan boy who eventually found acceptance in a family…

Talking about family, family is really important to wedding-planning…not just to show up for the actual day but also to provide support and resources during the journey of planning of the wedding…

I had lots of help from my family and relatives…

My relative who owned a printing firm provided free printing of my wedding card inserts…other relatives provide me 6 cars on the actual day plus when I deliver the wedding invitation cards…

some other relatives even provided the love and care when they realised that I’m super stressed up by the wedding…simple things like a word of concern or brewing of herbal tea for me to drink…

Not forgetting my friends, they are my helpers ranging from photographer to drivers to personal assistants and so on…

Last year was quite a lucky year for Chinese…and many of my friends who are of simliar age got married…about 10 of them in total

Some were lucky to have support from friends and families…

Others were not so fortunate…I have a friend who is a foreigner did not have the luxury of having her family in Singapore to help her…she had to depend heavily on friends…

However, nothing beats the word of care and comfort from our very own parents, especially our mother…

My friend was at loss and felt torn when she was stressed up by her future mother-in-law at that time…Her mother-in-law was not understanding enough to stop adding stress and pressure onto her…

My friend got so stressed up that she purposely returned home just before midnight so that the mother-in-law had already slept…
